In recent years, Australia has shown strong growth momentum in the field of cross-border e-commerce, and many cross-border merchants have bet on local stocking at the beginning of the year. The efficient and convenient overseas warehouse stocking model has gradually become the “new standard” for going overseas to Australia.
According to Cainiao’s global supply chain data, in January and February 2025, the inventory volume of Cainiao’s Sydney warehouse increased by more than 170% year-on-year, mainly due to the increasing overseas warehouse inventory of “Chinese smart manufacturing” such as 3D printers and 3C digital products, which has attracted countless fans in Australia. Statista data also shows that Australia’s e-commerce market revenue is expected to reach US$42.22 billion, or about RMB 307.51 billion, in 2025. Faced with the natural barriers of Australia’s vast land and sparse population and high logistics costs, cross-border merchants are leveraging overseas warehouses to further improve efficiency. In Cainiao’s Sydney warehouse, millions of Chinese products have been settled in advance through the “pre-stocking” model. As long as consumers place an order, overseas warehouses respond quickly, and east coast cities such as Sydney and Melbourne can achieve “2-3 days of warehouse and distribution”, which is 5-7 days faster than traditional cross-border direct mail.
It is worth mentioning that recently, Cainiao Sydney Warehouse has undergone a full range of automation upgrades to meet the growing demand. In this upgrade, the Sydney Warehouse introduced advanced intelligent sorting equipment, which not only improved its own service capabilities and operational efficiency, but also helped cross-border merchants reduce costs and increase efficiency.
Specifically, the device integrates volume measurement, weighing and barcode scanning functions, uses high-precision sensors and advanced image processing technology to automatically identify, process, weigh, scan and sort packages, and transmits data to the Cainiao warehouse management system in real time, greatly reducing the time and errors of manual operations, with an accuracy rate of 99.8%, and significantly improving picking efficiency by 5%. At the same time, through accurate weight and size measurement and photo retention, it avoids wrong charges and fines from the last-mile service provider, helping merchants optimize the last-mile freight costs.
It is reported that Cainiao Sydney Warehouse is located in the core area of Greater Sydney, enjoying a convenient transportation network, and can reach Sydney Airport and Port within 30 minutes at the fastest. The warehouse can provide B2C warehouse distribution, B2B warehouse distribution and one-stop or customized cross-border supply chain solutions.
Public information shows that Cainiao Global Supply Chain currently operates more than 40 overseas warehouses in 18 countries and regions in Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and other regions, providing omni-channel, end-to-end supply chain management solutions and warehouse and distribution operation services for a large number of domestic and foreign brands and merchants. In the Asia-Pacific region, Cainiao’s overseas warehouses have formed storage facilities of more than 100,000 square meters, and have achieved “2-3 days delivery” in warehouses and distribution in many countries such as Australia and Japan.
